Who Needs a License?

In the state of Texas, any person who takes or attempts to take fish, mussels, clams, crayfish, or other aquatic life in the public waters of the state—including the Sam Rayburn Reservoir and Toledo Bend—is required to have a valid fishing license with a freshwater endorsement. This applies to both residents and non-residents.

Special Exemptions:

• Youth: Any person under the age of 17 (resident or non-resident) does not need a license.
• Seniors: Texas residents born before January 1, 1931, are exempt. Residents aged 65 and older born after that date can purchase a "Senior Resident Fishing License" at a reduced rate.
• State Parks: A license is not required when fishing from the bank or a pier within a Texas State Park.

For trips with Caden Williamson Fishing, you will specifically need a Freshwater Fishing License. Since we operate in inland lakes, a saltwater endorsement is not required for our charters.

Where to Buy Your License

Securing your license is convenient and can be done through several channels before your scheduled trip in Zavalla or the surrounding East Texas area:

1. Online: The fastest method is via the TPWD official website. You can save a digital copy to your phone, which is legally recognized by game wardens.
2. Local Retailers: Most sporting goods stores (like Academy Sports + Outdoors or Walmart) and local bait shops in Jasper, Lufkin, and Zavalla sell licenses at their customer service desks.
3. By Phone: You can call the TPWD licensing line during business hours to purchase via credit card.

Important Border Lake Rules: Sam Rayburn & Toledo Bend

While Sam Rayburn is entirely within Texas, Toledo Bend is a border lake shared with Louisiana. Thanks to a reciprocal agreement, a valid Texas freshwater license allows you to fish anywhere on Toledo Bend, including the Louisiana side. However, you must still follow the bag and size limits of the state whose waters you are physically in at the time.
